GONGS: VOYAGE OF THE ANCIENTS #4 – RELENTLESS:TOWARD THE HORIZON

The Bronze Collection, Joseph Bertolozzi‘s solo percussion project for gongs, cymbals and drums is heard here in this live performance by the composer from The Howland Center in Beacon, NY, May 2004. “Relentless: Toward the Horizon” is the 4th movement from “Voyage of the Ancients,” a vibrant suite evocative of mythical times when heroic mariners sailed to the horizon and through underground seas.

This movement expresses the relentless persistence of an explorer with his eye on the ocean’s vanishing point. It has me seated to be able to utilize both of the foot pedals for the gongs, mostly seen in the bottom right of the screen. There’s a brief closeup between 2:25 & 2:32. The short, dry crash from my right hand is created by a Zildjian Trashformer cymbal with a flap of vinyl secured to the center post. When hit it flies up momentarily then drops back to mute the cymbal, giving it a short blast.
